The video posted over the weekend by ALX Accountability shows a pig head on a figure in the passenger's seat of an Alexandria police cruiser wearing a shirt that says, "I can't breathe."
"I can't breathe," were the final words of both Eric Gardner and George Floyd, who died as victims of police brutality.
ALX Accountability describes itself on YouTube as a "grassroots, citizen journalism organization" that "seeks to promote transparency and accountability through lawful engagement with government officials in Alexandria, VA."
In the video, a man approaches the vehicle apparently making the discovery.
"Unbelievable... We've got a highly inappropriate item in this vehicle," he says to a responding officer. "There's a t-shirt that says 'Can't breathe.'"
The officer vows to figure out how the figure got inside of the vehicle.
Alexandria City Manager Jim Parajon and Alexandria Police Chief Don Hayes released the following statement together:
"The City of Alexandria Police Department and City leadership are aware of an officer’s cruiser that contained potentially offensive materials.
"We apologize for the nature of this material. We honor the public trust by serving with integrity, civility, impartiality, and by holding ourselves accountable when we do not.
"The Department has initiated an investigation of this isolated incident and will respond in accordance with personnel accountability procedures. We recognize the importance of maintaining public trust and will continue to ensure our conduct, collectively and as individual employees, is reflective of our commitment to serve all Alexandrians."
